WHO WE ARE…

Asylum Research is a national organization that monitors and documents gay refugees and the unique problems they face seeking political asylum in the United States.

We assist gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgendered people, individuals living with HIV and their representatives. We are not a legal organization but we have experienced the very process of seeking asylum ourselves. We offer pre-legal assistance.

We want to help people understand the hurdles (legal, personal, psychological) involved in attaining asylum in the United States.

We have interviewed more than 300 refugees who have been granted political asylum in the US in the past few years.

OUR MISSION…

Asylum Research is an organization created to connect refugees with legal assistance, information, support, outreach, and referrals. It addresses the needs of people who are unable to return to their countries of origin because of fear of persecution based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Working with US law granting asylum to such refugees, Asylum Research offers help in assessing the legitimacy and truthfulness of an individual’s claim for asylum, and, where it is appropriate, assists them to find an experienced attorney in different parts of the country.

OUR APPROACH…

We come from a shared experience of seeking asylum. We know the fears and paralysis of rejection; the feeling of loss of one’s country and family; the fear of abandonment.

We know the common concern. We speak as refugees to refugees. We suffered the same plagues that you suffered.

We have been through it all. Are there hoops to jump through? Yes. There are many. We know what they are.

Based on this, Asylum Research is ready to help those who want to begin the process of seeking asylum in the US.
